Defending Querencias in the North Valleys of Alburquerque:
Juan Alemán 1541, Jacques Grolet 1694, Cristóbal Larrañaga 1805
This is the story of three notable defenders of our local Querencia, the beloved lands and peoples on both banks of the restless Río Grande below Sandía Mountain. "Juan Alemán," whose Tiwa name was Xauían heroically defended the valley of Tiguex from the ravages of the Coronado Expedition of 1540-1542. Jacques Grolet, whose Spanish name was Santiago Gurulé, was a refugee of the ill-fated La Salle Expedition who lent his frontiersman’s expertise to the 1694 Vargas "Re-Conquest." And Dr. Cristóbal Larrañaga saved a generation of Alburqueños and Corraleños, when he came through in 1805 with the Hero Children of the Real Expedición Filantrópica de la Vacuna.
